Faster than the speed of light |
| |
February 2008
The rapidly accelerating pace of development in micro- and nanotechnologies has created growing demand for imaging capability beyond the 1000X magnification available from a typical light microscope (LM).
Scanning electron microscopes (SEM) can generate useable information at magnifications higher than 100,000X, but they are typically slower, harder to use, and more expensive than LM. Now, a benchtop imaging system (Phernom, FEI Company) combines the power of SEM with the speed and convenience of LM, delivering crisp, clear images at magnifications up to 20,000X with about as much effort as a point-and-shoot camera.

SEMinal particle morphology analysis |
| |
January/February 2008
Evaluation and control of particle morphology is critical in drug development. In recent years, the
migration to smaller particle sizes has forced these evaluations to off-site SEM laboratories. New
instrumentation allows manufacturers to image particles in-house for faster development cycles
and tighter control as Joe Fillion, Product Marketing Manager, FEI explains.

Closing the Imaging Gap Between Optical and Electron Microscopy |
| |
July 2007 –
A new tabletop SEM combines the high magnification of electron microscopy with the ease of use of optical microscopy to improve performance in a benchtop instrument.
A radical new breed of microscope fills the critical gap between optical and electron microscopy. Optical microscopes are easy to use but generally limited to useful magnifications of 1,000x or less. Electron microscopes routinely operate at magnifications of 100,000x but can also be orders of magnitude more difficult to operate. The new microscopes, known commonly as tabletop or benchtop scanning electron microscopes (SEM), provide useful magnifications up to 20,000x and are as easy to use as the typical laboratory-grade optical microscopes.

World's Smallest Electron Microscope
(for Less than a Bimmer!) |
| |
July 06, 2007 – Recently, I got a tour of a new type of SEM called the Phenom, from Hillsboro, Oregon, company FEI (the letters apparently don’t stand for anything in particular). This scope is unique and revolutionary in that it actually doesn’t push the boundaries of magnification; rather, it changes the game when it comes to price, accessibility and size. The Phenom is about the size and shape of a desktop computer (although it looks more like a fancy coffeemaker).

12 oktober, 2006 –
Ben Bormans is niet alleen opgetogen
over de Phenom als elektronenmicroscoop,
maar ook over de manier
waarop deze ontstond. „Waar een
