The first Phenom product hardware was presented to a small group at the Philips Research Center at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven in January 2005.

Its revolutionary, innovative column concept made it possible to create a product with a variety of system functionalities. Together with many partners led by the NTS-group and Sioux, under the guidance of FEI product management and technical architects, the Phenom column concept was transformed into a market-focused product. With customer input as a guide, the result was the Phenom product launch in the Netherlands in October 2006.

In subsequent years, system sales achieved coverage of over 40 countries around the world. System development was focused on creating special sample holders for specific applications, and software programs to automate measurement processes.

Sample holders such as the Charge Reduction Sample Holder and the Micro-Tool Holder, and sample container inserts such as Micro-Electronics and X-View helped specific user groups load and analyze their samples faster and with less sample preparation. The software applications are combined in the Phenom Pro Suite platform with various specialized software applications. Automated Image Mapping automatically collects images at a specific resolution and magnification, Remote Desktop helps users and service engineers to remotely control their Phenom, while Fibermetric extracts all data from any filter or fiber structure.

After splitting from FEI Company in 2009, the Phenom-World company continued to create innovative holders and applications based on the needs of its customers. This led to additional Pro Suite applications such as 3D Roughness Reconstruction, which generates 3D images and surface roughness values for any sample. The passive sample holders were joined in 2010 and 2011 by new, active sample holders such as the Motorized Tilt & Rotation Sample Holder and the Temperature Controlled Sample Holder.

New technological developments led to the introduction of the Phenom G2 series, consisting of the G2 Pure and G2 Pro series. Where the Pure series is the entry-level system with basic fundamentals, the Pro series serves the high-end market and offers greater system flexibility.

With the 2012 launch of the Phenom proX, EDX analysis became available on the Phenom platform, making it possible to collect more than just images and image based information.
