Crime scene investigations
Other applications: Gunshot Residue (GSR) - Traffic accidents
If a crime scene contains microscopic samples of hair, diatoms and pollen, an electron microscope can be used for identification of these samples.
Diatom and pollen analysis can be useful in forensic science by helping to identify the provenance of individuals, clothing or materials recovered from investigation sites. Hairs can be transferred during physical contact; their presence can link a suspect to a victim or a crime scene.
