Scanning electron microscopes can be helpful in examining various samples from yeasts to muscular structures. Even hydrated specimens can be observed due to adapted pressure settings. This is particularly useful with very fragile specimens such as molds and plant specimens such as fruits and vegetables. Our temperature controlled sample holder can enhance this effect further and therefore enable imaging of vacuum sensitive or vulnerable samples.
CLEM (correlative light and electron microscopy) can also help in resolving the composition of products. For example, in products that are mixtures of amongst others fat, water and proteins, it is possible to tag the fat with fluorescence, so it is easily detected in a CLEM image.
This application note explains how SEM facilitates the study of inter-bacterial interactions, which in turn enables the development of potential cures.
